New solutions for validation and homologation of ADAS Functions

The approval and certification of ADAS and automated driving functions present substantial challenges for market introduction, primarily due to the vast number of relevant driving scenarios and environmental parameter combinations. Traditional real-world testing methods, including NCAP testing, are increasingly insufficient to address these complexities, prompting a shift toward virtualized testing through X-in-the-Loop (XiL) methodologies.

In response, AIP developed a novel validation framework designed to redefine the landscape of Vehicle-in-the-Loop (ViL) testing, free from legacy constraints and unnecessary complexity.

At its core is an AIP- patented concept involving four independent in-wheel motors combined with an electromechanical turn-plate— (swivel plate) referred to as Torque Wheel Dynamometers (TWDMs). These TWDMs, together with the physical test vehicle, are integrated into the 3D virtual driving simulation platforms. A suite of high-end I/O modules for connected powertrain and ADAS/AD sensor stimulation, including GNSS spoofing, radar target simulation, V2X communication, and camera I/O, complements the setup. This integrated approach lays the foundation for highly reproducible, real-time testing of automated driving functions within a controlled and extensible lab environment.

See a demonstration of this new approach at AIP’s booth in KINTEX.
